    Actually....re-thinking it, if you consider a kick off going dead recieves a drop out, then it becomes a bit weirder.

    Oi. I've got one.

    Let me set the scene. It's game III, 2014. 16-16 with 10 seconds left on the clock, NSW have the ball 30 out from their own line. Hodges decides to rub it and gives Todd Carney a bit of a squirrel grip. A brawl ensures, the video ref looks at it and calls a penalty to NSW. By now, the full time whistle has blown.

    Say Todd Carney kicks for touch and gains 40m. To restart play, you need to kick the ball right? So could Todd Carney not take a free shot at a field goal to restart play?

    No no, NSW are 70m out from the Queesland try line. They get a penalty on full time, so Carney kicks for touch and gains 40m. It's a NSW tap on the Queensland 30m line. Instead of the hooker tapping it and throwing it back 15m for Carney to take a snap with the defense charging him, couldn't Carney just kick a field goal as the tap?

    As far as I know, that's legal.

    Free Kick. (Second Kick)
    The ball may be kicked in any direction in any manner when bringing it into play after entering touch and the kicker himself may pick up the
    ball after he has kicked it.

    Yeah. So there's the penalty, player kicks it out and then they kick it out again... what happens then? Just a scrum?

    It would be the same as any other kick. If it's out on the full, scrum from where you kicked it.
