Yeah, playing 164 Prem games in a row is an incredible achievement.

Good post. I think what Gerrard and Scholes both particularly deserve praise is the the way they've adapted their games over the years. Gerrard was used as a holding midfielder by Houllier, a striker by Sven Goran, attacking mid by Benitez and now generally plays a deeper role again. Scholes evolved from an out and out attacking midfielder into a more cultured playmaker.

There's a case to be made for Lampard deserving praise for never having really needed to change his game though. Might have helped him out in England colours, though.

Fuck that, Harold Bell played something like 400 in a row for the whites, league and cup. Probably had another job as well.

    Edit - 401 league, 459 in total

I would have said Lampard's adapted to a deeper role quite well this past couple of seasons. It's not that different at all to what Giggs or Scholes went through, missing plenty of games but still regularly making key contributions (e.g. yesterday). It's tended to be perceived very differently for a number of reasons but on the pitch I think his career's gone a similar way to the others.

At his peak he was less adaptable than the others for sure. I don't really think that's much of a weakness personally. I respect how well he performed a specific role in a hugely successful system, because in a way I think that's what it means to be a good footballer. Gerrard spent his career being shunted around an at best intermittently successful side, and although it's not entirely his fault I can't help but count it against him that he so rarely made up part of an effective unit.

Steve Coppell played a lot too, not as many as that, but it was something like 219/220. Then he got injured and it ended his career.
