After some in-depth thoughts here, hoping the knowledgable guys will chip in.

How do you think Ablett has faired both on and off the field with the pressures of captaincy? Do you rate him as a top class leader? Do you think he has his own unique style?

Go into detail if you can, would love to read it.

It's an interesting question. There's no denying that he's an introvert and introverted blokes can make good leaders but he just seems too passive and submissive a bloke to effectively lead a group; especially kids. Certainly better options there, for mine.

Who at the Suns could be captain though?

    :ninja:

Just looking for some insight into his personality that you guys might have picked up. It's not going to focus on his captaincy but I'll need to mention it

    No chance.

Would you say he's excelled in his position?

    What do you mean position?

I think he has developed into a great leader at the Gold Coast, yes he does not have that aggression, but he leads by example an thats what the Gold Coast need at this point

I think Cotchin's a much more natural leader than Ablett though.

Ablett's always been a shy, humble bloke. He may have been somewhat lazy early in his career, but it's never been about him, he never harps on about himself. Like Skip said, he's an introvert. He's not massively vocal and, like Nathan and his old man, has never liked the public focus and hasn't always been able to deal with the pressure like other league footballers can.

That said he's really grown into this role though. He's become much more vocal on the field with the kids, which is fantastic, they need him to teach them. His media presence, while still relatively low, has improved too, even though his speaking still leaves much to be desired.

He's definitely a lead through actions guy, and his actions are top notch. He's a genuinely fantastic dude - would be a great friend to most at the club, the best player in the competition and, by the time his career ends, possibly ever, and is a class act in general - I've never heard anything bad about him.

I'd have rated him 4-5/10 as a leader at Geelong (that said he would absolutely had been my choice for Gold Coast captain anyway), but he's grown to a solid 7/10 imo.

The problem with both Ablett and Cotchin is that they've got inferiority complexes that are quite noticeable if you look for it. To me, a captain has to be modest, slightly above average in intelligence, approachable, relatively likable and normal. If you disagree with them or have some form of a tiff, you've got to have faith that it'll be handled professionally, objectively and unemotionally and with both of the above, especially Ablett, there's no way I'd feel comfortable even questioning them for fear of the consequences. Ablett definitely gets way too defensive and insecure when his authority or stance is even slightly questioned - as a leader, it makes him completely and utterly unapproachable.

You're gonna hate my post. Let's just ignore each other on the issue :p

Nah I can definitely understand your position, and I've definitely got huge amount of bias when it comes to Gary. Still gonna disagree though :p

Disagree so badly on the GAJ being unapproachable thing. Definitely seems like the most easy to talk to bloke.

The problem with GC is that among the young fellas, there are very few leaders.

Only really Prestia and to a lesser extent Swallow & Matera look like leaders. Among the old guys Brown's a definite leader but not a captain, and Warnock, Bock and Rischa have decent leadership.

They couldn't not give the captaincy to Gary; there's still an expectation that the elite players are the elite leaders & captains and the gap between GAJ and the next best was so great it'd have been offensive not to.

But I'd have personally, purely from a leadership and development and provided Gary didn't have a sook upon not getting it, given it to either Bocky or Rischa. Warnock's a good shout now too.

He's not forthright or assertive enough to be a 'problem manager/solver' which to a lot of young guys who are new to the system, is exactly what they look to the captain to be.

Nah, it always had to be Gary. Face of the franchise and he's the one they all look to. He's the best player in the comp, he's getting paid $2M a year, this is how he does it. They're all going to be looking to replicate his work rate and the way he goes about his footy. Always had to be Ablett, even if he's not as vocal as the others.
