Could've, Would've, Should've

The current theme around this forum seems to be nostalgia with all the threads reminiscing about past greats, so I thought I'd continue the trend ...

Players who will be remembered for their unfulfilled potential, whether through injury, laziness or something else. Doesn't even have to be past players, as I'm sure Dave Taylor is worthy of a mention somewhere in here.

On his day he was a world-class centre. He had the ball skills to allow him to fit into the halves (to a passable level) and out in the three-quarter line he was a brilliant exponent of the draw-and-pass. Playing on the wing outside of Martin Gleeson was a cushy job in the same way as playing outside of Matt Gidley or Jamie Lyon was. With ball in hand he ran strong lines and had a killer right-foot step that continually baffled defenders. It caused havoc in SL and at Test level.

Unfortunately he was fucking erratic and he lacked the dedication to reach his peak: his weight ballooned whenever he wasn’t in a really strict club culture; he had a well-known issue with alcohol; he bet against his own team in a game he was playing in; and eventually got banned for 18 months for taking PEDs.

The common refrain about English rugby league is that there is a serious dearth in outside backs and for the last decade Gleeson was the chance to fix that. He had more potential than any British centre since Ellery Hanley and Garry Schofield and yet he somehow managed to piss it away. Instead of being remembered as one of the best players in SL history, his career is defined by a litany of off-field incidents and the occasional bursts of brilliance on the pitch.

Had the potential to be a dominant front rower of the past ten seasons was solid in defence i remember him putting a few good shots on and always got injured as soon as he could string a few games together. Pretty sad I looked it up wondering what happened to him and he retired at 24 poor cunt.

Great shout could have been centre in the world if he had his head screwed on properly

[Insert first name here] Tsoulos? I only remember his last stint at the Dogs. Pretty unlucky to have to retire so young.

    Adam Ritson

Plunged into first grade at the age of 16 after played 29 games for the sharks before signing for the eels. Only played 11 games for Parramatta before John Lomax ended his career with a high shot.

Went through 14 odd operations and settled a law suit with the Raiders out of court.

I remember the hype about Ritson, was going to be huge.

    Most definitely Ryan Williams.

He was fucking gun. A really good second rower who's career got cut well short due to a concussion that was ever lasting.

    Nice avatar Wilson.

I wanted to do that but my file size limit was too small.

    Both of them.

Gordon Tallis was the benchmark backrower of his generation, and the player who really entrenched the way the role is played today. With his weathered face and chrome-dome, you'd be forgiven for thinking he was close to 50. He is only 39. He was forced to retire at 31 due to a neck injury, a time where forwards know their game the most and play their best footy IMO.

    Ben Ross.
Was at his physical peak when he was stuck down for almost 2 seasons with a neck injury. He courageously returned and is a still a solid firstgrader, however one could only imagine how long he could have played at the level that saw him selected for QLD, and if he he could have been even better than that.

    Jamie Lyon

The above image is something me and just about every Queenslander is glad they haven't had to see for the last few years.
He is a bloke who was lost to Super League for a number of seasons, then returned, only to pull out of rep footy after a couple of seasons.

Would be the best pure centre in the world, yet refuses to play the pinnacle form of the game...

Could have been anything if he didn't lose a nut :P
