Apparently as a knee jerk reaction, the NRL have changed the rule so that if a player shows any sign of concussion they will have to be taken off and will not be allowed to return no matter what.
No because they would be under huge scrutiny if they let a player continue who is clearly needs attention
If this is true, then an 18th man will need to be brought in. Then need to keep an eye on clubs getting certain players to act concussed at a certain time in the game.
I mean taking them off if they are concussed is a good thing, but forcing it if they only have 'signs' of concussion? Bit knee jerk, don't you think?
Yeah they should have some sort of extra "concussion only" interchange player. That's where having a true Chris Flanneryeque utility would become really handy
But what are the signs? Isn't that the point of the concussion test currently? So what happens if they take the player off to test him and he passes? He can go back on? Isn't that what the rule is already? Or is the rule at the moment if you fail that test you have to wait a minimum of 15 mins and now they're changing that to being the whole game?
If he comes off to do a concussion test he can't come back on. The whole point of it is that team doctors are taking them off and checking them and putting them back on for the sake of the team winning aka what happened to Reynolds
Well yeah that was my point then. If a player is 'maybe' concussed they're not gonna risk taking him off to test him or give him a quick break, only if they absolutely have to.
If doctors are sending concussed players back on to the field they should have their medical license revoked.
Greenberg was asked this question on Friday and said that it wasn't what they discussed at all. Has there been a new meeting since last week or is this the same rumour because I didn't see much change over the weekend tbh....
They will now be forced to take a player off and keep him off if he exhibits any of these symptoms. - Loss of consciousness - Falling to the ground without taking protective action - Seizure - Memory impairment - Balance disturbance (ataxia)
Sounds like it's been announced today, although its not clear what date it'll start to be enforced. http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2015/04/08/new-nrl-concussion-rules-help-doctors
I wonder if it'll stop the likes of Greg Bird from blatantly feigning injury so he can get the vid ref to take a look at it. His standard fall to the ground like he's been shot must tick a couple of those symptoms.
Players fall to the ground from head clashes all the time without ever losing conciousness.. bit of a fine line there, especially when some need to be taken off for stitches.
