This is such a moot point, of course physical attributes are going to be more "natural" than learnt attributes. There is no such thing as a natural ball player. The guy you think is a natural ball player probably has naturally very good spacial awareness and then uses that to his advantage when making decisions about the way in which he uses the ball. A natural ball player isn't a thing unless he is an amalgamation of a number of genetic dispositions to do with mental/emotional and physical attributes. There is no innate skill governing the playing of football, football is a learnt skill.

The argument isn't whether you want a naturally talented team or not, the answer would always be yes, (combined with a good work ethic they easily make the best football players) but what sort of natural talents you want where on the football field.

And I've blown loads that could fill yoghurt containers.

Regardless of the toothpick on a mountain metaphor you're attempting, it cannot be said that picking Norman over Hoffman at fullback is a move away from playing football and towards homogeneous athleticism. It's quite clearly the opposite.

Well, we certainly disagree about that. It's rather clear to me after watching and playing the game for this long that certain players possess a range of faculties that go into making a ball player. Spacial awareness is just one in a long list of inherent abilities. Timing is another. As are vision and decision making. Of course, these things can be taught in the same way that you can be taught to run faster. But there will always be kids who are naturally swifter than others just as there will always be kids who, before they receive any real coaching, can sum up a situation and see where the ball needs to go and deliver a pass or kick at the right moment. I was knee-high to a grass hopper when one of my first coaches told me I had good vision. And it's why I was still playing in the halves when I quit footy nearly a decade later.

no such thing as a natural ball player?

    I've heard it all now.

If you guys keep this up you'll all get your periods on the same day which would be pretty cool.

I don't know that we do disagree. I do not mean to say you can't be naturally gifted in ways that make you a good footballer (I was using spatial awareness as an example, it certainly wasn't meant to be exhaustive) but there is just no such natural ability that is called football.

The conclusion I draw from this however is that a natural "athlete", as you say, is just as much a natural football player as a natural "ball player", their natural gifts that make them suited to football just lie in different areas.

The Natural ability is in the spacial awareness, reactions etc. They may have been able to apply these to different sports/jobs etc.

Applying it to RL is a learnt skill.

Like, you couldn't grab a skilled soccer player and expect him to set up plays on the League field, just because of the natural timing and awareness they display in Soccer. They may acquire that ability in time, with more experience playing League though.

Natural ability is like the opposite of what Jack Reed has.

Jack Reed is lucky to have a centre spot.

It's sad how much he's been declining. In his first season, it looked like he could be a genuine very good centre.

He's been poor ever since though.

He's the kind of player who'd be god at the Storm.

    So is Norman probably, lol.

    I wasn't suggesting otherwise.

And I think we're talking at cross-purposes when we use the term "footballer." A footballer to me is not simply anyone who plays football. It's a very specific term which, as I said earlier, has it's analog in boxing.

    Poor response.

    In your initial statement, you stated the following;

Put simply, you postulated that Griffin picking Norman proves his natural football bias is the equivalent of you turning off air-con for 1 hour proves your global warming concern. In this analogy, you are Griffin, global warming is a preference for natural footballers and Corey Norman is the environmental impact of an air conditioner that's only been turned off for an hour.

This is perfect for your purposes, as everyone can relate to the fact that Griffin (you) could do far more than turning his air-con off for one hour (Norman) if he really cared about the environment (Natural footballers). It's short, it's simple and it works. Well done.

However, you then fall apart in your second version of the analogy. Now, when someone suggests that Norman is at least a better 'natural footballer' than Hoffman, you reply that you are more environmentally conscious than your neighbour, who never turns his air-con off at all. THIS IS ALL WRONG! You've just compared yourself to Norman, but you're not Norman, you're Griffin! How could you forget that? A better, and much more apt response would be "My air-conditioner that has been turned off for an hour in a day has less negative environmental impact than if it were to run for the entire day", as it would have held your analogy a lot better. And if we ignore the fact that this was pretty much everyone's point, as it was raised in rebuttal to Cribb's suggestion that you always pick the item that harms the environment the most as you actively attempt to hasten the progress of Global warming, then this would have been a very poignant point.

Please try to do better in the future.

Well that's the last time I try to be a smart ass in the Broncos thread.

    It was pretty lame.

Hoffman set to be named in the halves, and will swap with Barba throughout the game.

    RIP In Peace.
