I like McKernan. He's played in the wrong role in the wrong team though. A trade would do him wonders.

 

He'd play better in Jenkins' current role. He works best when there are free lanes for him to run through, if you know what I mean. It's pretty easy to shut him down with a zone or flood though.

McKernan's the kind of forward who'd have excelled 10 years ago in a rigid structure; the flankers play the flanks and up the ground while the pockets sit back and take the crumbs. He's got an excellent leap and he's agile - with space around him he'll be able to work over a defender well enough to find 2-3 metres of space - and with his leap & height he'll never lose a ball when he's 2-3 metres up on the defender. even 1-2 is enough.

Right now he's having to sit in the middle of a forward line that almost zones within itself. There's no structure, it's headless chooks. He can't find space as his teammates are bringing opponents through the lanes and running lines.

I wouldn't mind seeing him play a bit of a Jack Watts flanker role either. He's got the hands and agility to play it, just not the disposal yet.

He's a handy defender too, trust me.

He's just the wrong height. If he had 3-4 cm more or less he'd have a role. Right now, he's like a 6'4-5 SF in basketball - that's about the best comparison I can think of.

 

Jenkins is quicker than most midfielders at top speed. He's just a crab in other parts of his game. Good player.

Grigg has awful disposal, and Lyons's pace is worse than Brock McLean.
