That's the issue. He couldn't stay after the statement, but Eds is just playing silly.

Once RVP came out and, basically, publicly undermined Wenger and the Arsenal management it made his position at the club completely untenable.
He basically came out and said that he knew better than Wenger, or that he deserved better.
Obviously, he's since leaving he's had better but the issue was that to come out and say what he did was a huge slap in the face to the club who made him what he is.

People always ask, why don't you hate Cesc in the same way? He threatened to never play again etc etc. The difference being that (a) Cesc's relationship with Barca is entirely different to RVP's with United and (b) Cesc never said a bad word against the club in public, certainly not in the same vein.

The fact RVP wanted to stay in the end and was still sold just goes to show how damaging the statement was and why most Arsenal fans want him to go fuck himself.
