Well, he can play a number of roles, but in each of those roles, there's someone left that's better than him. And in the centre of midfield in particular, there's no shortage of players.
Milan are a couple of point off second place in Serie A and he's probably been their most consistent performer all season. Go ask any Milan fan who they class to be their most important player this season and 9 times out of 10 you'll hear Montolivo.
There plenty better than him in the advanced playmaker roles but there aren't many available that are outright superior to him in a DLP role IMO.
Probably best not to continue this conversation too much longer due to unpicked players but I don't agree, quite frankly. Maybe he can "assume control of the game like no other player for Milan" but that's because he plays in CM, and Milan's team is incredibly top-heavy - it's hard to control a game from your forwards. That statement being correct doesn't necessarily mean he's been good at all.
Anywayyyy. Fair enough. I can't really convince either of you on my decision. I don't think it's a terrible pick but in hindsight, I should have held off on him as two people have already said there are better picks. So I could have nabbed him next round and picked the other guy this round. Let's hope he doesn't get picked.
Crap, I keep forgetting. Edited my post. You can edit yours. I know forwards can't really control the game but I was talking about the rest of the midfielders that are regularly used by Allegri. It would be an abosolute shithouse of a midfield without Montolivo in there and Milan wouldn't be doing nearly as well as they have done this season. And he's been great this season not just because of his ability to assume control but due to his consistency, his contribution to different phases of play, work off the ball etc etc.
