This guy is intense. Represented SA at the 2011 Youth Olympics for the 100m, and on top of all of that he showed brilliant brute strength and white line fever in his opening match. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind he is a future Springbok.

Yeah he was the difference in the game - at least his tries were - no doubt his forwards and defence did some hard yakka too.

    His fend was top drawer.

  3. MrPrez CM Dyer

Yeah, the whole team played well but Sergeal really stood out. Remembering he's only 18 now, imagine once he's a few years older and therefore stronger. Geez.

There's more to rugby than being quick and strong tho.

  5. MrPrez CM Dyer

Yes but if you're a winger those are the two main parts of your job. Besides, if you'd seen him play you'd understand. He was a monster.

  6. Eds E Ames

Yeah fair enough but whenever I see you describe how good a player is, it's always how quick/strong he is.

Assume he's playing Super Rugby anyway?

  7. MrPrez CM Dyer

He's a fucking winger. Obviously you look towards speed and strength when looking at the modern winger as key aspects. Not sure where I've said that about other players, but if I have I would surely have been talking about either wingers or centres too.

Yeah, he made his debut yesterday and scored a brace.

Awesome first name, tbf. How's it pronounced properly? I'm reading it as Sur-jeel, but probz wrong.

Kid has some serious guns, but is a bit of a short arse so wonder how he'll go defensively.

  9. MrPrez CM Dyer

Sir-jeal. The jeal part is like veal but with the g sound, but the g sound is a standard j but more like the g in genre.

Yeah he looks solid but he only weights 82kg according to wikipedia(lol) so he is actually on the smaller side. He's only 18 though - he'll still grow, and he's already really strong on the attack.

Sir John Kirwan made his debut for the ABs at 19 btw.

Wonder how old O'Connor was, not that he was a good measuring stick as he was awful for his first few games before coming good.

  11. Droos JP Rhodes

Jumping the gun there a little Prezzie. Although he did make a solid contribution and played a decent game, wait for the season to pan out so he can face some proper opposition before marking him for Springbok glory - it was 1 game.

  12. Hurricane JD Hurricane

    How's he faring now?

  13. Droos JP Rhodes

He didn't have any good showings in the last few matches, but has been selected for the U20 squad going to the World Champs in June. I reckon back at age group level he will be a beast though, especially with players like Jan Serfontein and Handre Pollard on his inside.

  14. Rego RS Hutchinson

He was 18 iirc. Started Super Rugby at the age of 17. Scary really.

James O'Connor is a once in a lifetime - he is an amazing rugby player imo.
