should try forming an opinion on the game and the players whilst actually watching the game and stop relying on stats. Stats are so deceptive. That is all.

I watched a game 6 years ago and Luke Lewis should be centre for the blues.

Ironically I reckon the people on here who talk about statistics the most are generally the ones who watch the most games.

    Centre? No. Fullback? Yes.

Or act like they do and just use the stats after the game to discuss what happened. Huge difference between watching a game whilst relaxed/doing things etc. and watching the game with 100% concentration.

Majority of this forum actually, become a pretty big trend around here.

Stats are only as deceptive as the users/readers understanding and knowledge of the game allows them to be.

If anything I think they're generally misused and undervalued in the wider Rugby League community and find it refreshing to see people discuss them.

NRLstats taking down of season averages is up there with the Super League war as one of the worst things to happen to Rugby League in the past couple of decades.

Nothing wrong with using stats provided they are accurate, contextual and not disingenuous.

Personally, I think statistics are criminally undervalued in RL. And if they are used in, say, the media, they're usually misused or result in absurd derivations.

Agree to a point. Stats are handy when pointing out something that maybe isn't noticed so much (ie workrate) but there are a lot of things that happen on the field that stats can't measure (communication on the field or whatever).

I honestly don't talk that much about league anymore because without Fox Sports I can't watch every game and have a real opinion. The only way to really have an idea is to base it off highlights/stats and opinions when you rely on Chan 9 coverage.

    Especially the missed tackle stat.

What's deceptive about the missed tackle stat? I think it depends entirely on the position. For centres and wingers, missed tackle stats are virtually meaningless but for any other position, they're valid IMO.

Defensive player rushes out of the line and attempts a big hit shoulder charge. He half connects and the attacking player's momentum holts and is immediately swooped on by other defensive players. Say he does his 5 times. In the stats he will have 5 missed tackles net to his name when in reality his actions stopped the momentum of the attacking player and probably lifted the aggression of the rest of his team.

Doesn't always work out that way but you get my drift.

Alot of broken play and alot can be blamed on the defender next to you even up the middle. Also a player can rush up and have a missed tackle yet still cause the play to shutdown. You can easily tell by watching the game who missed the tackles through shitty defending so I don't see why it's necessary.

The main stat on here that people abuse is the metres per run for every forward... I've watched countless games where a forward especially in a winning team has provided little impact and never gets over the advantage line yet gets 'good stats'.

I'm glad that you said that they're meaningless for centres. Hodges suffers greatly from missed tackles being put against him where he clearly shepherds the player into a bad position through his defensive work.

I definitely found myself relying too heavily on stats a couple of years ago.

I think that there a few stats that are under-valued on here. Mainly, offloads. Each offload is pretty much worth 10m in my eyes.

    Sandow is a terribad defender.
