Initially wasn't too wowed by Theros but after having a proper look through, there are some real nice cards in there. Some of the nest new mechanics in here too.
There's a lot of good individual cards in there but as a set on the whole it's quite weak. Either going to be awesome for standard or another Dark Ascension type set (About 5 good cards and the rest is trash) and I doubt it'll be in-between. Looks fun to draft though.
Soooooo, we have our next PTQ in SA next weekend, and the format is sealed - which is fuarking awesome imo. 3 x Theros and 3 x Born of the Gods boosters. Standard has seen quite a shift recently as well with more and more players moving away from the Esper control and going for Azoriuz control instead and mono Blue and mono Black devotion decks have started diminishing with Gruul Monsters and Orzhov Midrange decks picking up heavily. Gruul Monsters is an insane deck atm!
Yeah, I blame Modern. Though I hear Merfolk are being played now, which for someone who's primarily played Merfolk since day 1 of Modern (When they were the dominant legacy deck at the time and only lost force/daze from the format) is awesome. That loss of decent counters was HUGE though.
I should draft more. Got a foil sarkhan in the draft, ID at 2-0 and get a sorin and fetch in the packs. And the guy I IDed with managed to get even better prizepacks somehow (better fetch and foil treasure cruise)
Fuark, that's golden. A Sarkhan in a sealed event is a game winner. Do you play standard / modern regularly?
Not standard, with a GP in Auckland next year might pick it up. Got a full merfolk modern deck together though, but don't really use it, only started to get back into the game recently. And yeah, it basically was, my deck was heavily aggro though, got a turn 5 kill at one point without Sarkhan being drawn. Aggro if you can get it in Khans is insane because earlygame is so weak.
I love the modern Merfolk deck. I currently run a UWR Burn, but without the Delver's. I only splash Blue for 2 Geist and 2 Supreme Verdict. Yeah, the Standard scene at the moment is ruled by Midrangy decks like the Abzan and Mardu decks, although I also tend to play the aggro decks like Temur, although it is still slow-ish. How we miss Red Deck Wins . . .
And btw you guys are fortunate to have a GP there. All the PTQ's for SA have been moved elsewhere so we have no premier events next year. Hopefully I can be in NZ by the time the GP comes round.
