Is AFL Becoming Unwatchable?

Serious question. With the recent criticism from nearly every media commentator and many coaches about the state of the game and how the umpires are letting it flow to much to the extent that its becoming a rolling maul I thought I'd get some opinion on it. Between lethal suggesting 'zones' and all the other proposed changes, does something need to be done?

After listening to Andrew Jarman rant on for hours on triple m this morning I'm getting sick of it really. It's not even that bad, I don't even notice the congestion they speak of half the time. And I enjoy it anyway.

It's still very watchable, the umps need to grow a pair and start calling more caught with the balls though, it is ridiculous at the moment.

  3. Skippos SM Morgan

Yeah I do agree on that. So many blokes have like 3 seconds, do sfa then just get fingertips on the ball as they get it out mid tackle and get away with it

Reality check: if someone does fuck all when they've got time to do heaps, if they get tackled fuck em unless they get a >5-10 metre kick away while they're being tackled. Fuck allowing anyone to ineffective handball their way out of a HTB call

Massive over-reaction. It's no worse then last year.

David King calling for boundary throw-ins to be scrapped in ridiculous.

It's only the people from the 80s who want all the violence back in it that are complaining.

  7. Toolman TR Man

There's no structure to it at all, ball just flies around everywhere. Fucking stupid sport.

  8. Dirk Diggler DM Diggler

    No structure

Haha shit of all the criticisms....

Afl mightn't be like league where there is a distinct line but its a game of structure in a way similar but not identical to soccer

As an aside no need to come in and bait/try and start a league/afl flame war, don't think any of us go into league threads to troll

Soccer is way different. AFL looks like a mess, there's players everywhere the ball is constantly going who knows where, it's not a set of aesthetic passing followed by good decision-making, it's basically a contest of luck where the ball spits out half the time.

NRL averaging 16,000 people at games this season.

    We'll be right.

People pay to watch the big marks and the big goals. They're all still there.. If anything this season has been better. Infuriating at times due to the umps, but that's okay.

Never even compared it to RL, you guys did. At least I can admit the faults in the sport I like. Rugby League is a shit live sport to watch.

I think umpiring has been better overall, given they're letting more things go. But they've definitely over-corrected.

    2014 umpiring > 2013 umpiring

They just need to start paying more holding the ball free-kicks and give the key forwards a chop out when they're overly manhandled.

You've just got an untrained eye toolio and don't appreciate or understand the finer points.

Thank god I'm not the only one. Expected to come in here to rip you about it. Love that everyone seems to think this way - it's all media beat up and most AFL fans notice this.

    Massive DWTA.

    a) that becomes an entirely subjective call for an umpire to make - that spells danger. They've been good this year because its easy to tell what's a good call and what's not.
    b) holding the ball is that, holding the ball. It's not a freekick to reward players who make good tackles, it's designed to penalise those who cannot correctly dispose of the ball. I don't care if you move the ball a metre or 50. If you get rid of it, you got rid of it.

    Agreed.

Exactly. They've been trying to do this for years. They want crash and bash footy, but the reality is that that kind of footy would lose you every game this week.

DWTA about the holding the ball, but the forwards thing is something. Personally I reckon you should be able to push an opponent as much/as hard as you like as long as it's not in the back. Don't allow any grabbing, only pushing. You see a grab, auto freekick. It's easy to define and still rewards the player with brute strength.

    Then the moment Hawkins retires

'Nah no brute strength allowed ok'

    Umm wtf?

Diggler can c' I've thought that way for years.

Look, we all know you fap over anything athletic but that's an interesting attack Skip, even for you.

I was pointing out that it just so happens that your stance would turn your #1 forward from a 45 goal a season fwd to an 80 goal a season fwd.

    A little convenient :p
