League v Union stuff

Hmm...I think we can find much bigger difference between the codes than in the centres. It's basically two sets of two guys trying to break the line and/or feed their wingers, and tackle. Centres in both codes are roughly the same size and shape and have similar skill sets. And I know plenty of union halfbacks who would tackle all day at hooker while also running from dummy half well

I don't think conversion rates are much of a guide, although I used to. It's more about money than anything. The reason why Rogers, Cross, Sailor, Tuqiri, and co. have switched and we haven't seen the same in the opposite direction has to do with the coin IMO.

On the other hand, Cross would never have played for Australia in League as he has in Union but maybe he's more suited to Union, I don't know.

I like both too but grew up playing union. Can't stand AFL. Watched a bit of NFL last night actually but facepalmed when there was a penalty and the refs official explanation was "unnecessarily rough defence"

    :fp:

People here think Union is a slow game... hooollly shit, they should really watch a game of NFL, wow just wow. I feel so sorry for Americans.

  5. Tartmaster AJ James

    Yeah it's fucking slow as.

Most of that comes down to how much harder it is to be aggressive in union without being punished. Given how many penalties are given already, and how valued they are, the risk vs reward just isn't there.

What position was Brad Thorn in league?

  8. Speirz DG Speirs

    Second row.

Prop and second row. Played prop for QLD even.

Yea like watching cricket but a nfl game is quicker.

    Proberly a unsecured hit.

No. Those were his actual words. "Unnecessary roughness"

It's an official penalty worth 15 yards. Link

(And the word is "probably" ;))

  12. Mousey AJ Son

    Fair rule though tbh.

  13. Fiery GR Smith

Yeah but it just sounds a bit namby pamby

  14. centurymaker UL Bolt

    Yeah I know!!

But they repeat that countless times in a game.

    it's free-flow fluent rugby.
not systematic boring stuff like in league.

It's like any sport though, you can make it as boring or as exciting as you want by playing different styles. Watching some of the NH sides ignore massive overlaps just to play crash ball over and over again is like having teeth pulled, and in the same way watching Melbourne turn every game into a wrestling match is boring as fuck as well. Some of the purists might like watching the NH rugby, in the same way some cricket fans find Dravid entertaining to watch.

This is the sort of shit that makes me intolerant of Union. How they can take a classic, textbook use of the shoulder and infer it as a pejorative and a negative.

"Coming in with the shoulder and hitting him pretty hard." - That's what I try to teach 6 and 7-year-olds to do ffs.

It's a negative, and illegal as a result, because it's far more likely to cause an injury. Simple as that.

It's a contact sport. Injuries are an occupational hazard. Outlawing shoulder charges is just one of the umpteen reasons why Union is softer than League.

Just because it is a contact sport doesn't mean players can do whatever the hell they like without regard to the safety of every player on the pitch.
