Was Meninga overrated?

As a NSWshmen I didn't get to see Lewis week in/week out until he was a tad past his prime when the Broncos came into existence. I did see him live however, in that '89 Origin game at the SFS when he single-handedly won the match after Meninga, Langer & Lindner went off hurt. I was actually sitting next to John Monie at the game and he said it was one of the best efforts he'd ever seen on a football field.

That was enough to convince me he was brilliant.

I think John was an absolutely brilliant footballer; however his rep career is severely overrated. He is easily the best club level half I can remember seeing though(I don't think a guy like Johns is comparable to a guy like Lazarus or Tallis for example).

I'm only 30 so my memories of Wally playing are sketchy; but what I've seen from replays/recordings he was great. But as M_F has stated, the game was played differently then so comparisons are difficult.

I'd put langer up there with Johns.

His rep career was a lot better, but he may have lacked the allround skills of johns eg. He wasn't a goalkicker?

He was probably a better leader than Johns though?

I really don't see a huge amount wrong with what Magic or Julian have said. I disagree that Lewis wasn't very talented or that he would have come through the forwards in the modern game; however, if you're talking about how a player looks based on their highlights then I tend to agree.

If you watch his highlights it should be apparent that he was a very good player but without getting to watch a lot of his games, I think it is easy to struggle with his position as arguably the greatest player of all-time. He certainly isn't the most aesthetically pleasing or flashy player going around and his skill and dominance doesn't jump out at you in the same way it does for a player like Brett Kenny. But that is just a reflection on how difficult it is to judge players based on their highlights, especially when they played in a different era and especially when they were a player for whom their vision, decision-making and calmness under pressure were some of their greatest assets.

On what basis though? They both have impressive records as leaders.

    Untrue.

But, good to see that I made such an impression, despite only making a handful of posts before realising that the dickhead quota here is far too excessive to be bothered with posting, or visiting for that matter, regularly.

It's also somewhat reassuring to see other people taking exception to the ridiculous racist slurs that pass for conversation here.

    Always liked this try. http://youtu.be/Y-XEqRGDWa4?t=43m35s

Glad we have a one-on-one rule nowadays. http://youtu.be/x5MGBNZgVvc?t=18m43s

His ability to stand up in the big games when it mattered it what sets him apart from a lot of players IMO. There were very few times when he was required to come up with the decisive play that he failed. 12-12 with Australia's unbeaten record for this tour on the line.

I just don't think Johns had the right personality to be a great leader. He just lost it sometimes when things weren't going his teams way- at refs and at his own players.

Not saying he was a terrible leader just not a great one.

Lewis spent most of his career running around in a second tier comp, of course he looked good. He was as bad as Mundine when it came to attitude as well, when he was dropped from the Aus side he was calling on conspiracies of the heads of rugby league 'record protecting'.

He needs to hurry up and disappear into obscurity, can't stand listening to the cunt on tv.

LOL ......played in RL's top tier comp tearing NSW new arseholes in his spare time.

Yes but you're also one of the most avid Wally Lewis fans I've ever encountered. So the fact that you can't appreciate why other people might not having an immediate appreciation of his greatness is about as surprising as water being wet.

I can certainly appreciate why someone may not appreciate his greatness when they've barely seen him play. Almost by definition.
