    Auckland Qualifiers

Qualifying for the Heineken Open was a dismal affair this morning, with the wet, dingy weather reflecting the lack of exciting matches, all of which were completed in straight sets. Probably the most exciting was Charlie Downes' defeat at the hands of South African Jonty Rhodes. The match required a tie breaker in both sets, with neither player seemingly wanting to gain an advantage before that. In other matches, Gareth Weaver made the most of the home crowd that had decided to turn up to crush Chad Dyer 6-1, 6-3. Despite a meagre serving performance, Jono Chewie booked his place in the main draw with a huge win over fellow Asian Aby Dforum. Dforum looked out of sorts all through the match, ending up with a rather high error count at the end of the match, although he did serve well for once.

A full list of the results:
Joshua Ritchie def Benny Read 6-1, 6-4
Charlie Downes def by Jonty Rhodes 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (6-8)
Ether Starris def by Rego Hutchinson 4-6, 6-7 (5-7)
Gareth Weaver def Chad Dyer 6-1, 6-3
Aby Dforum def by Jono Chewie 1-6, 2-6

    Updated draw:
    Code:
Luka Popovic (1) v Joshua Ritchie
    Reagan Wheelson v Heath Davis

    ----------

    Wes Welker v Rego Hutchinson

Bruce Force (2) v Jonty Rhodes
    Truman Lee v Andrew James

  9. Number 11 CJ Downes

So I tried to make an interesting backhand centric player but it seems I'm a total dud. :(
