do they still have what they called the draft (not at all similar to American sports) where any players not wanted by their home region become readily available to any other nz team

draft is the wrong word to use tbh but im pretty sure that's what they would call it,

If super rugby is to work as a spectacle you have to allow players to do what they want.

IMO you should be able to take Saffers, australians or kiwis in your teams and they can still represent their respective countries.

So Dan Carter could go play in south africa if he wanted

As an outsider looking in, I think Super Rugby would lose something if each team was made up of 5 Saffa forwards, 6 All Black wings/halves and a couple of Aussies making up the numbers. The clash of styles when the Bulls and Stormers play the Saders or the Chiefs definitely makes it more interesting.

Also, if Super Rugby were to bid high enough to stop star players from going to France or Japan, where would the money come from? Would the star players bring in enough to the budget on their own to break even? (I suppose that's possible actually...)

Only to an outsider, Most New Zealanders typically don't give two shits about the other 2 countries teams.

I'd struggle to watch 3 games of super rugby a week but I have no problem watching NPC because I really enjoy the localness aspect.

What would make me watch super rugby is if it was completely franchise based aka Americanized but without a draft allowing fair competition for players in the 3 nations.
Teams would still have their own strategies based around their team composition so its a nuffie arguement saying all the styles would be similar.

Also another thing that grinds my gears is how to so many people have a blind loyalty to rugby but cannot be arsed to go down and pay to go to the game. I mean look at aussie rules, EPL, NBA, NHL, NFL not an empty seat but we struggle to fill 1/2 a stadium

Point well made - but I don't see how the 'saders would get more attractive with a front row of Yarpie Van Yarp, Yarpie Burger and Jannie Viljoen, which they could end up with in a free Americanized draft. Rather the opposite.

Putting people off the 'Saders is always a good strategy tbh. They're effectively the Manchester United of NZ anyway.

Lee-Lo signed with them because he was not offered a contract by the Hurricanes. He is a young man who wants job security.

The fans of the Hurricanes are yet to mention the elephant in the room or ask the question why these players want to leave? The Hurricanes back line should look like:
    15. Dagg (Woodward/Taylor)
    14. Jane (Popoali'i (spelling?))
    13. C. Smith (Tamati Ellison/Freuan on the bench)
    12. Nonu (Charlie Ngatai)
    11. Savea (Gear and Guildford on the bench)
    10. Cruden/Barrett
    9. Weepu/TJ Perenara

Obviously you aren't going to hold onto all that talent but of the 17 talented outside backs I have named you have only held onto 5 of them. This is a you problem.

  9. Jabba HJ Bots

Dagg wouldn't have excelled in the Hurricanes like he did at the saders cause Jane wouldn't have been moved to the wing to accommodate him

With Guildford and Dagg in particular, the problem was a perceived bias that the Hurricanes would only select from Wellington players, leaving non-Wellington players from the region to pick up the scraps in terms of contracts. The Crusaders obviously identified the talent a bit more astutely than the Hurricanes (as I've mentioned, you can't fault the Crusaders' ability to identify talent) and offered them better terms and better security.

In theory, that problem should have been solved. But with Taranaki making overtures to join the Chiefs, I'm not entirely sure if that animosity between Wellington and the regions has been solved.

Nonu, Gear and Weepu leaving was an entirely different proposition.

Fruean always felt like a poach to me.

Nothing wrong with poaching in super 15. Npc poaching just makes me feel so dirty

Failure to call one "Van Der Van Van" is inexcusable IMO.

  14. MrPrez CM Dyer

The word "van" literally means surname in afrikaans.

    True story.

No the Super 15 already is stacked with star players so if people aren't turning up then they are never going to turn up.

    SBW played last year
The ABs play in it. Genia plays in it. And the Boks play in it.

The other issue I have is that at most the Super 15 teams could each afford one marquee overseas player. This rule would cause serious discontent for the big franchises. Genia would feel like he should be the marquee signing and so the reds wouldn't be able to sign an overseas star. Likewise with the Crusaders and Chiefs.

Yes I agree. As long as he is staying in the Super 15 he should be able to play for whatever team offers him the best contract. This should stop him from going to France so often and getting injured in the warm ups for the first game like usual.

In all likelihood players will prefer to stay in their own country to be close to friends and family so it will only happen if someone puts some serious dough on the table.

I do think though that the Crusaders should have the right to match and make the final offer. And I also agree with them getting first dibbs for the players in their feeder teams rather than it being open season on whoever you want every season. That would raise salaries I suspect and hurt the business model (assuming that today some
joe bloggs player from the naki can't shop himself and create a bidding war).

  18. Fiery GR Smith

That would suck massively. I wouldn't mind having the odd Northern hemisphere player in the NZ super teams but not Aussies and jarps. Kinds defeats the whole purpose of the competition.

    All for this tbh:

    The Chiefs v Toulon?

If reports from France are correct the game between the Heineken Cup winners and the Super Rugby champions will be played on February 2 in either Nice or Monaco.

French newspaper Midi Olympique claims the two teams have agreed the date, although it will be played the day after England plays France in the Six Nations Championship and while the Chiefs are still preparing for the defence of their title in the 2014 Super Rugby championship.

The newspaper also claims several television channels have shown interest in broadcasting the game.

Acting Chiefs chief executive Sean Austin told Sportal today that there was definite interest in the proposal and they were exploring the option.

However, he said it was still in the early stages and nothing had been agreed.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie is on a trip to North America, where he is believed to be meeting with some NFL clubs, and was unable to be contacted.

Rumours of Nonu heading to the Chiefs since SBW won't be signing.
