How much of that ALC form Veza will be able to regain next round will be interesting.

Wasn't that issue of the debate though. Eds never tried to argue that Veza was the wrong selection and that Humble was a better bowler. His argument was initially based on the fact it was wrong of Skippos to pick a novice and risk him doing poorly when you could just let a proven failure do a negligibly worse job.
Which is why the allegations of not picking to the rules came to the fore as what Eds said does contravene the rules.

I lie somewhere between the both of you (no homo). You're basically the extreme pillars of form v long-term proven class here; pretty much every other selector lies somewhere between you two blokes. I'd definitely lean more towards Eds in real life but I'm more central on CricSim as things can change pretty rapidly.

Ftr. Picking a player who you'd expect to average 85 ahead of one who you would expect to do better just because the former is already a no-hoper = not picking best team for the next game etc.

  6. Skippos SM Morgan

    This, essentially. Cheers.

In real life I'm all for the Eds approach.

*newsflash* dis aint real life 'yo *newsflash*

ftr most selectors just copy paste a side. hence why i feel bad having a go at eds as, like me (i hope), he actually gives a shit and puts thought in. respect it.

Early CricSim was full of absolutely dire knee-jerks. You would've been considered conservative back then. Hell you can see it in your own subforum - every week someone wants to change the side based completely on what happened the week before. I prefer the copy/paste era to that random shit. :p

That post wasn't based on selection, that was based on what I'd prefer to happen, if that makes sense.

If I felt that the new player would genuinely do a better job than Humble then I'd play him. But a lot of the time the player that's been there longer gets the nod.

  10. Skippos SM Morgan

I'm assertive in selection but I don't think I make the wrong calls.

I agree, copy/paste > knee jerks - but then I'd sound stupid and add that somewhere in the middle isn't right - i'd almost have it leaning towards knee jerks.

  11. Eds E Ames

You shouldn't feel bad because of that. You should feel bad because you can't see that I fundamentally disagree that short-term form > long-term ability. It's not based on me breaking the rules or developing youngsters (although that's certainly a nice side-effect).

I just think his results stack up better than someone with 20 ALC wickets at a less than outstanding average. He's exactly the sort of player that clubs rely on to use for one game here and there when there are injuries and I don't think Veza had really done enough to leapfrog him yet. It was a 50/50 call though, and based on Humble's long-term terrible BS performances and short-term poor ALC form you were quite within your right to pick who you did.

  13. Skippos SM Morgan

If I conceded that I'd be admitting I was wrong. Nice try.

I agree, long term ability > short term form.

    It's just what constitutes ability.

    Noir never had ability.
    Humble never had ability.

    Warrington/Veza have form.

    some form > zero ability.

P.S. dispute the notion that the first 10 games of someone's career only count as 'form'

they're a representation of the players current ability.

  14. Baxter MJ Deane

Haha, I'm even odder. Think I'm pretty good when it comes to changes between teams but have been guilty of making changes within teams a little regularly.
In my defence the makeup of the Ravens/Testies batting order did seemingly change quite regularly with Damo/Scott/Shri being dropped. Also didn't help matters that different players were all making runs in different comps (ALC/PCDIY/HP).
    Batting orders ftl.

  15. Mike ML Martyn

You can't be too conservative. That sort of approach leads to guys like Howell playing over more deserving players.

  16. Eds E Ames

    You're wrong. :p

  17. Skippos SM Morgan

    Yeah I do that too.

I think you could argue that I'm superstitious about where people bat <_<

But Logan/Lee/Das/Myself have all switched positions regularly throughout both forms this season. Skippos WAC

    Or Corbin playing? :ninja:

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

Haha yeah I definitely think you tinker with batting orders a bit too freely, but at least you seem to do it through the logical thinking of "we need our best middle order batsmen up the order". Far too frequently on CricSim I see the absolutely terrible logic of "these two players are both failing so let's swap them!". Unless you're an opener batting in the middle order or something, expecting to reverse terrible form by batting higher is absurd.

  20. Skippos SM Morgan

haha awta. it's like (hypothetical) the Saders leaving Noir in BS for two seasons averaging 20 then he makes a century and they're like told you so and then they can't drop him for another 5-6 games.

You've got to bite the bullet sometimes and I'm not afraid to do so.
