Posted this on bigfooty today, and thought it was appropriate to repost here.

I'll start with a warning. This is going to be long. It might criticise decisions made by key club personnel at times. If it does, the argument of ''I'd back the club in every day over you'' does not have any weight. Attack my argument, not my credentials.

    Observation one.

Not only do we lack pace (but this has been evident and poorly addressed by the club for long enough that we all know it to be an issue)' but so many times our players refuse to run, spread and create options. We all yell at our skill errors and poor decision making, but so many times our only option was to bomb it long to contests because no one even bother to be on their bike and off their man. For the most part, the guys who do actually create options are the most maligned players in the team. Jackson creates options. So does Edwards, Rance, King, Morris and McGuane. White, Grimes and Cotchin all work to create an option too. Want to know why they get a game? There's why. What's concerning is that not enough of those are good users. But that's not Jackson's, King's or Rance's fault. The more I watch, the more I worry that it's both the fault of the gameplan and the poor workfare of some of our players.

Guys who need to learn to present harder or more often are: Grigg, Petterd, Reiwoldt, Vlastuin (harsh on the new bloke I know), Vickery, Knights, Deledio and Houli. It's not just limited to these guys, of course, but it's something they need to work on.

It's with that that I turn to something that's connected to this. Our mind boggling forward structure. The more I see of games the more I'm convinced our forwards are instructed to stay back and wait for the high ball and attempt a contested mark in pack situations, rather than to repeat lead, push hard at the ball and provide a 40 metre option rather than a 60 or 70 metre one. We all know it, but if one forward pushes up the ground it creates space for the other forwards. Too often McGuane is the only key forward willing to push up the ground. Too often Vickery and Reiwoldt end up next to each other, flying for the same ball and drawing an extra defender to the contest. Too often forwards sit stationary, 65 metres from the play and scream for the ball to be placed on their head.
I'm convinced that kicking long balls to good contested marking forwards is our game plan. If this is indeed the case, why is King the only small forward who gets within 50 metres of the fall of the ball at marking contests? Too many things about our forward line structures don't make sense.

Now on to my new bugbear, the weird usage of our big three midfielders. Too often on Saturday out three on ballers at centre bounces were Jaclson, Edwards and one of Cotch, Martin or Deledio. I can't remember many times when all three of Deledio, Cotchin and Martin started together in the square at centre bounces.

If Deledio is getting towelled up by a tagger, playing him off half forward as the midfielder running into the square doesn't help him break the tag. Get him in the guts to get his hands on the ball, to win a freekick, or to gather a clearance, and then he's on his way.

We have an elite midfielder who can play off half back regularly. His name isn't Trent Cotchin. Cotchin is more dangerous in either a contested ball situation or forward of the ball where he can create pay without worry of paying dearly for his errors. Notice how conservative Cotchin's decision making was off half back? How little he dashed? How he's not as effective at being the third man up as Deledio is?

The solution simple. If you're going to persist with playing Cotchin and Deledio out of the square, play Deledio off half back and Cotchin as the half forward running in as the seventh on baller. Ideally, you just chuck the two of them in the guts with Martin to begin with.

I'll leave it there for now - I look forward to robust discussion with a few of you.
