It's more of a case of "wouldn't feel confident in either batting Top 4" and you've got them in your first five picks. I don't know but I feel like I'd avoid it personally.
Mulder's batted four a fair bit in domestic cricket. I don't really see a drama with just batting them at 5 and 6 anyway though. I think once you get down to domestic guys to fill up your batting lineups you'll find a lot of guys who want to bat top 4.
There's got to be a hole somewhere though.. I mean, I have picked an opener so it's not like I've neglected the top order entirely. Bowling/keeping options who bat in the top 4 are basically non-existent. So something has to give somewhere. Plus most gun FC bats will be top 4 specialists.
Yeah fair enough. Had it in my mind Mulder's mostly only batted 6. And yeah I guess I see your point.
Round 6 1. Skippos - Oshada Fernando (366725) Hmmm....his FC record isn't all that special, his Test career also hasn't been very long. Probably would've gone a couple of other options at this point I think before BOP. 2. Hunter - Tim Murtagh (17134) Good pick. Though it's hard to know how to rate Div 2 county cricket especially for medium pacers. Has done well in the Tests he's played though. 3. Number 11 - Dwaine Pretorius (327830) Picked on his all-round abilities and I'm not convinced in that regard about them. At this level I think he's not much more than a #8. He's arguably good enough to be picked on bowling alone at this pick, but in that regard I think there's better options left over. 4. Benny - Janneman Malan (605680) Good pick, though not a lot of track record behind him yet. Still, the same applies for most of the other quality batting options left over. 5. GoodAreasShane - Darren Bravo (277472) The fact that he's barely played for three years is the problem; it doesn't help that he didn't exactly dominate in the Tests he did play this year. I guess though the batting depth is rather poor which means that the other options aren't all that stellar either, but I think I'd have looked elsewhere. 6. HeathDavisSpeed - Hasan Ali (681305) I think this pick is fair enough though, especially given bowlers with any degree of international success are hard to come by at this point. 7. morgieb - Shubman Gill (1070173) Hopefully one of the Indian bats gets injured soonish () Very good pick right now (and has the potential to be a massive steal long-term), but there's not much track record yet which means a dodgy Ranji season could hurt. At least he's done well at A-team level. 8. Julian - Gary Ballance (232438) In his favour: probably the best county batsman still around, and has done pretty well at that level in recent times. Not in his favour: his record still isn't incredible in recent times and his recent Test performances have been crap. Still, a decent pick at this point. 9. Captain - Roston Chase (391832) This is an excellent pick. Very comfortably a Top 6 option and can bowl. I'd have thought about him a fair bit earlier. 10. Cabinet96 - Matt Henry (506612) Another excellent pick. Dominated his one full chance at FC cricket in recent times and maintains a quality ODI record. 11. Boobidy - Will Pucovski (772365) Early, for mine. He's someone that will improve and his FC record is already pretty good but he doesn't seem a R6 pick yet. Then again, the batting depth seems patchy. 12. Gazza - Hardik Pandya (625371) Having Buttler makes this pick more viable, I think. Same with Woakes as it allows for a gun 7/8 combo and can help nullify his potential no-rounderness. 13. Dhokchau - Marcus Harris (434813) Very good selection. Has been rock solid at Shield level in recent times and probably the best opener left over. 14. Alex - Wayne Parnell (265564) Yeah, not really a fan of this pick. I guess having Ashwin and Wade means that this pick can be afforded but there's better seam bowling all-rounders left over. 15. Baxter - Lewis Gregory (362201) Like Gregory for example! () This pick is a good one, though maybe not the Somerset all-rounder I'd have gone first. 16. Phlegm - Will Young (547749) Hard to say. I'd think I'd want him to be more dominant at domestic level for this pick to be a good one at this point, but then again the batting stocks aren't too flash. Possibly a bit early, but if he gets into the Kiwi side and does well then it starts to look a lot flasher. 17. Howe and Dan - Chris Tremain (553800) Good pick. Has long dominated Shield cricket (and on a flat pitch for good measure) and one I'd have considered a fair bit earlier. 18. StephenZA - Mustafizur Rahman (330902) If we were just doing it on FC selections this would be a pretty bad pick, but being able to tap into ODI cricket helps a lot here. I'm not sure whether the ODI rules will apply to Mustafizur, but if it does it's a good pick this late. 19. Chewie - Will Somerville (38607) Yeah, I think this was slightly early. Especially given Herath was picked the pick after. 20. Athlai - Rangana Herath (49178) Would probably have gone first round pre-retirement. Now granted that was twelve months ago, but at this point in the draft this is a dream pick. 21. spark!ptz - Priyank Panchal (340062) This pick is helped a lot by 1. how well he's done in recent times and 2. his gun A-team record; his overall FC record appears to be a standard average Indian domestic batsman. At this point I think it's fair enough. 22. jimmy_c8 - Taijul Islam Hmmm....he does have a Test record at least, but it's not a good one. I guess I can see the logic though, especially given the other spinners left over have even more concerns. 23. MrPrez - Craig Overton Should've been picked before Parnell or Gregory, for example. Very good pick at this point. 24. Magrat Garlick - Mitchell Marsh Even at Shield level he doesn't seem to stand out in one discipline as an all-rounder. This pick's value will depend a lot on the balance of the team, I suspect. Best pick: Henry and Chase two standouts. But the best pick IMO was Herath. I haven't included any of my picks thus far because I don't want to be too partial, but I suspect a lot of people to say Gill. Worst pick: Parnell. Pretorius not too flash either.
Yeah true, though COverton has played Tests in the interim though which I think probably doesn't help the gap.
He'd be lucky to average 20 over the last 4-5 years though. It used to be fine, now it's really not a #7 standard IMO.
Without Tests 906 @ 17.09 134 @ 22.72 So still worse And Gregory's most recent season was h4x so even the weighting/form is in his favour.
Weird calling Pucovski a bad pick when you call Harris a good one. Pucovski has the better record, Harris is a dud as shown at test level.
Overton and Gregory both excellent picks and both on my list. Was considering Gill when I picked Fernando but figured the bloke playing tests (and he's looked pretty good doing so) a safer pick. Probably wrong. Also was considering Pretorius. Reckon you've been real harsh on that one Morgz
Pretorius is only about half the batsman he was a few years ago IMO, so Morgie hating on his batting was probably fair enough, but he was probably close enough to being a justifiable pick on bowling alone anyway. If he bats well at 8 or meh at 7 for who picked him it's just a bonus IMO.
During Puco's career Harris FC average is higher, and that's despite him shunting the Tests he played. Pucovski will be a better player, but at this point Harris is still the better bat. Your Rd 7 pick is better, too
