I Welker and the Mustangs the real deal?

Currently sitting 2 games clear of the Parrots (yet to play this week) in a very weak Conference A with a record of 8-4, the question has to be asked, are the Mustangs a real finals contender?

If the season were to end now and we went straight into finals, would Wes Welker and the Mustangs be able to outlast Ames and the Hurricanes to make it through to their first finals appearance in the comp? With both superstars standing 6'9", little would separate these two if they were to go head to head. Apart from one stat.

Wes Welker is the standout player for the Mustangs this season, averaging 26.9ppg, 7.0rpg, 6.7apg to go along with 0.8spg and 0.4bpg. These stats tell us a story that, whilst Welker dominates on the offensive end, jacking up almost 20 shots per game, but what he lacks, is defense. Less than 1 steal per game and under 1/2 a block per contest for a SF like Welker, is well below average.

If Welker was to go up against LeBron Ames in the finals he would have his work cut out for him. The Hurricanes main man matches Welker in almost every aspect but excels on the defensive end. The big man averaging 2.3 steals per game and 0.7 blocks. The two teams have only had one encounter this season, back in Round 4, with the Hurricanes winning by just 3 points in the end after controlling the majority of the 4th quarter. Welker came out on top with a stat line of 21 points (9-16), 8 rebounds, 10 assists and 2 steals to Ames' 24 points (8-21), 12 rebounds, 5 assist, 3 steals and 1 block.

The lack of height has been a problem for the Mustangs all season with a distinctive lack of big men inside. Without a true centre on their list, the 'Stangs have relied on their forwards playing above their capabilities and so far they have done well. Were they to come up against Himann in a Finals campaign, I would dare say they would struggle. The big man is averaging a smidge under 16 points a game at 63% shooting from the field to go along with 12.6 rebounds.

If the Tigers were to finish second in Conference B, then the Mustangs would struggle even more. With 3 players inside the top 10 in the league, the Tigers truly are a force to be reckoned with. But not only is it a trio of stars, they cover all positions with Hall (21.5p and 14.8r pg) the rock in the middle playing PF-C, Morgan (22.3p, 9.9r, 6.2a and 2.4s pg) playing a tall 2 guard or SF and Lee (20.1p and 9.4a pg) the true point. That's almost 65 points per game out of just 3 players, no matter how good an offensive team you are, there's just no way you can outscore the Tigers. The only way to shut them down is to stop them scoring, something the Mustangs aren't quite adept at right now.

Vince is the key component here though, he is averaging 2.2 steals and 3.3 blocks per game and I would say close to being the DPOY at this point.

TL;DR - For the Mustangs to be a serious contender in the Finals, they need to lift their D

I think there's actually a little substance to this. If the Mustangs have a weak point right now it's the lack of good one on one defenders. They don't really have a guy who'll shut down the number 1 wing or number 1 big consistently, although I think Read and Welker could give I a shot. They're better defenders than the stats suggest, but not elite. Vince is a more opportunities defender than his stats suggest, but is still an elite rim protector. He thrives with his length in man to man D, but I reckon he'd be a top zone defender too. That could be the way they go for playoff time. They're playing well though. Don't fix something that's not broken.

Tigers score 108 ppg as of round 11, 3 teams score significantly more and 3 other teams are even or close behind. They also average less assists per game then the league average and struggle to get to the foul line. Don't talk up their offense as being elite

    Vince 3.4	12%
    Read 1.6	6%
    O'Neill 2.9	10%
    Astele 5.4	19%
