    OK, so I'm playing a sevens rugby match in two weeks. I haven't played a rugby match since I was 9, so I'm the ultimate rugby match n00b. I'll be playing against the first team of a... OMG this Lulova sprinting girl is hot!!!!!!!!.... small high school (about 200-odd I'd guess with guys and girls) but we are a school of 130-odd with guys and girls) and we only just started rugby whereas they've played rugby regularly.

    Crash course on how to cope? I'm 1.75m, 70kg, a quick runner (I'm guessing sub-12 second 100m) and have a pretty good sports-mind (1st team captain in cricket and hockey).

    1. Catch ball.
    2. Run fast.
    3. Touch ball behind line.

    She's amazing, I stopped typing this until the camera panned off her. Wow.

    :laugh: I can do all 3 :p

    Am I right in saying that touch rugby helps with the more expansive style of rugby required in 7s? Not that I'm going to prepare with touchies obv, just that I've played a fair bit recently so at least I'd be slightly prepared.

    I'm talking more about the physicality - they say its dangerous to play rugby without training due to needing to know how to land and how to roll away in the ruck etc.

    For the benefit of everyone else, do land on your neck.

    The rucks aren't much to worry about in sevens. You say you are fast but that isn't going to matter if your fitness isn't great.

    :(...

    Yeah that's what I'm worried about. I'm very unfit - I manage to get through a hockey match being in the thick of the action and not being subbed, but I'm screwed afterwards. I'd imagine 7s is a lot more taxing.

    Just train a couple of times this week and next, you won't feel sore after the game then. At least not due to muscle fatigue.

    Do a 40 mile run for your fitness.

    On the rugby:
    1. Run away from everyone with the ball
    2. Score
    3. Blame everyone else when you lose.

    Whilst I've always never liked the game of sevens compared to rugby. To play sevens is so much fun. I remember playing in the sevens tournament every year. You'd be fucked after the 4 games.

    Fitness is huge. Trust me. What position are you playing in?

    Throw it to the fast kid.

    Can you tackle?

    Tuck your head to the side of their legs and hit their thighs hard with your shoulder - wrap your arms around their legs and slide down their legs gripping tighter and tighter.

  17. MrPrez CM Dyer

    @Rocks: in this team I'll be the fast dude
    @Rego: Wing
    @Hurricane: Cheers mate.

    Unless you're confident you can make a break downfield etc, try to stick close to your teammates so you can keep recycling possession/slow down the play a bit to get a breather. When you're tackling, make sure you hit with the shoulder around the midsection and drive with your legs. Always put your head to the side, never put your head in front of the guy running. That's the only way people get hurt in tackles. Fitness will be a big part.
