It just hasn’t clicked: Fung

    By JM Hughes

It was only Season 9 where the Stingrays finished comfortably in fifth position and were well in contention for a Bannerman Shield finals berth, they were only a few points behind the Ravens who also only just narrowly missed out. In a slightly better position were the Avo Lovers Cup side who made it to the semi-finals only to lose by 7 runs in the end.

The fact that the Stingrays were able to make the semi-final in the ALC should have been a fairly strong indication of junior development within the club and everything should have been looking a whole lot more positive.

By the time Season 10 arrives we see a drastically different side. They're no longer optimistic, their junior development has halted and they have fallen well off the pace. The Stingrays are now sitting at 5th with a last ditch attempt for finals glory currently underway. They have had a very tumultuous season and things don't seem to be easy if you were to listen to the latest gossip off the rumour mill.

What has exactly happened at the Stingrays apart from a Presidency change from GEC King to K Fung? Things just don’t seem to be easing up either as the club looks to improve come Season 11. It will not be an easy task either with a number of personnel changes expected come the end of the season.

There would be no-one more disappointed than Kelvin Fung who in his first season as President at the Stingrays, has had to face a few tough decisions and had to question exactly what is going wrong at the moment.

“We do have a classy side this season, but unfortunately for us it just hasn’t clicked at all” Fung said

“The team is just not firing [at the moment], usually it's just been one or two players gunning it with the rest being passengers”

Since the start of the season, the Stingrays have had a rocky ride moving up and down the ladder for the vast majority of it. Their lowest point, second last behind the Crusaders, who were controversially, docked competition points for cheating at the start of the season. According to Fung, the bowling line-up has the right balance at the moment; it’s just a matter of finding some more consistency.

“We have a great front-line bowling unit in GJ Weaver, AP Farnsworth, GEC King with good support from HJ Bots and BH Borisc”

“We are probably just one decent seam bowler away from an awesome [bowling] unit. We had SJ Cambridge marked in as the player to step up to support our pace attack, but unfortunately it just didn't work out” Fung said.

The Stingrays would be the first to concede that that their batting line-up has really underperformed this season and when contacted by the Herald, Fung said so himself.

“Our middle order has really underperformed this season especially with experienced players like ZA Berkuta, B Man and EL Volavola playing well below their capabilities”

Fung was also quick to add that the lack of batting depth was a problem for concern and would be something they would have to re-assess come the end of the season.

The rapid rise of ML Martyn is someone who has saved some respect for the Stingrays according to Fung, Martyn, who has played more games in the Bannerman Shield than he has in the ALC has been an impressive revelation.

“He [Martyn] has impressed selectors so much this season that he is now a main-stayer in the BS side with 7 games to his name in his debut season” Fung added.

Normally when a team starts to talk mathematically when it comes to playing in the finals, it normally means they are no hope but Fung hasn’t quite given up hope.

“As long as we are mathematically possible to make the final I don't think we'll give up hope”

“Who knows, I mean we have the team to do it, so if we all play to our potential we could just sneak into the BS final” said Fung showing the optimist inside of him”

“We’re not going to think about - we'll just take each game as it comes and enjoy playing as a team”.

At this stage of the competition, the Horrigan Cup appears to be the Stingrays best chance at a shot at glory. They are currently sitting comfortably on the ladder and will be hoping for a strong finish in this competition to salvage a little pride.

“The Horrigan Cup side we have fielded is really impressing me… I think with the way we've been playing, we could well make it into the Horrigan Cup final, and possibly even take out the minor premiership” Fung said

When asked about Season 11, Fung said it was a matter for the off-season but knows that the promotion of some of the juniors is vital for the Stingrays success come Season 11.

Obviously it's a little outdated but there is still a bit of content in there that is worth the read. No mention of the changes at the top in this one due to when it was read.

Going to release another article that hasn't been put to print in the Herald probably tomorrow.

Reckon we should try and finish another edition and have an internal review where we get applicants. Too many members in there at the moment, not doing/not able to do any writing.

I find it a bit strange that we were in the same position as the previous year, but that was a positive one year and a negative the next...
