Closed roof stadiums

Rugby League really needs some. Watched 3 games of affle at etihad last weekend and it's so gun, saw two there last year as well at I'm completely sold on it. Positives:

-Weather isn't an issue, even if it's not raining it's fucking freezing at night time throughout winter. The closed roof kept things noticeably warmer inside the stadium (no idea exact degrees though)

-Better atmosphere, not that I'm an acoustics expert but there was only 18k~ at the Bulldogs-Lions game I went too and it sounded like there was 25k+,

-If it is raining it provides a better spectactle, really, really wet games can be fucking shit house

-Better crowd numbers: I'm sure there'd be extra bodies through the gate if there was the ability to close the roof on freezing cold nights/pissing down rain.

-The roof doesn't have to be closed: if it's a beautiful evening or a day game just open the fucker up

I'm normally a massive traditionalist when it comes to sport but this is something that needs to happen imo

Not all stadium roofs are openable tbh. However, my experience of a covered stadium is pretty positive. As you said, the enclosed nature of such stadiums makes the noise and atmosphere much the better.

I know there can be issues with letting enough 'weather' in to allow the grass to grow properly (the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin is open at the sides to allow air movement and to maintain appropriate levels of air moisture etc. and has a permanent roof).

It would be a shame to see an end to "wet" games of footy though. Whilst they aren't as attractive, they are a real part of playing league, union, soccer or football and require a different style to play well in those conditions.

But yeah, generally I'm in favour of more covered stadia. The Westpac Stadium has announced this week that it's looking at installing a roof (cost ~ $50-$100m!).

Yeah I have been saying this for years. They need to put a roof over the SFS and ANZ stadium. This whole ANZ whinging about some stupid contract that states they can be the only roofed stadium for the next 10 years or whatever is ridiculous.

Also imagine origin at ANZ sold out under a roof. It would be an incredible atmosphere.

Fuck ANZ, someone should burn it to the ground and use the insurance money to build a proper rectangular stadium.

SCG Turst's plan is to put a permanent roof on the SFS. Which I'm not sold on.

I think the place that needs to be revamped into a state of the art stadium is parramatta. It's a huge hub and wsw are doing the area wonders.

Yeah permanent is not the way to go imo. Should be open for day time games imo
