Is it illegal to slap the ball out over the deadline? I tried to google this but could not find anything concrete.
I don't know? A Karmichael Hunt clip showed up as a related video on youtube which lead to a union clip where he was penalised for slapping the ball dead.
Not illegal if I'm thinking what you are but it does result in a 5m scrum. Of course it would be easier to touch it down and have a 22m drop out.

Yeah, that would usually result in a 5m scrum to the attacking team but the fact that it would most probably have been a try had he not batted it away means that the penalty try gets awarded. Penalty tries are basically awarded when the defender stops what would be a certain try by doing something illegal.
Deliberately throwing or knocking the ball from the field of play is a penalty in union. Law 10.2 (c) http://www.irblaws.com/index.php?law=10 As KHunt denied a try scoring opp, ref had the option of a penalty try.
Well that's just fucked. Probably too used to league but FMD there'd be like 50 penalty tries a season.
Isn't passing it into touch to end the game allowed though? The defender can dot the ball defensively and earn a 22m dropout. He can't do what he did though.
Yeah and if slaps were illegal in AFL how many penalties would there be? It's just the rules. If you can't get control of the ball you've no business trying to stop anyone else doing so.
That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Of course you have business trying to stop someone else getting the ball, if you're defending your line, your priority task is don't let them score, if you cn bat it over the line to stop that then of course you should be allowed to.
I knew someone would reply with something like this. 1. High tackles are dangerous, slapping a ball is not. 2. If you're in a position to hit them high, you're in a position to hit them normally. This is not always the case with slapping/grabbing/grounding the ball.
Rules of a game aren't solely set on whether something is dangerous or not, though. Grounding a ball takes far more skill than hitting it away.
