It's not so much that you can't play both it's just that I think your pack is already so one dimensional and lacking in mobility that buying the same of what you already have is a bit of a waste. I'm saying it knowing I would've moved Brown into the front row rotation and spent that RCG money on a more mobile lock, someone with some ball playing ability or a stronger defender to lock up that middle third.

Easier said than done though given the options on the market.

With a lot of money now wondering who the Cows will be scouting for in the backs as they've long needed a clean out there. Not deluded though to think that's the only thing we need because our tactics need a massive change too. The same shit plays in attack and poor defensive tactics and formations need a major overhaul too.

You'd have to think their play will improve with Clifford and Drinkwater getting more time under their belts.

At least there's some cause for optimism in the 1,6,7

Jack Bird wouldn't be a bad pick up for a discount from the Broncos. He's probably good for 10 try assists and 10 tries as a centre.

Cows just signed Marsters. High quality goal kicking option for them.

  5. Lukic L Popovic

    haha.

If he gets back to full fitness he'll go alright. One of the best centres in space and devastating step + offloading ability. Not great at putting his outside man away though and D is suspect.

I think the Cows have paid overs though.

To be fair Kahu wasn't exactly a great kicker either. Missed his share from closer to the posts. Really need to become much more cohesive defensively above everything else.

I can't see the Cowboys doing anything until they change the coaching structure. I know Green won a comp and then got to the gf 3 years ago with a depleted team but they've been treading water since their last gf.

I had this discussion with Cribb, Read and Gemmell the other day but he seems to want a quick fix all the time. Not propping up cash for Ponga, letting a few other good juniors go, jumping straight on supposedly already developed players like TMM, Barba, Kahu as soon as they're available and consistently chasing Holmes. Asiata in the halves for half a season over Clifford. From the outside in it also appears as though he simply uses Morgan to do what the team needs (regarding player availability) rather than deciding what he is and sticking with it.

Their only hope is Robson absolutely gunning it but then that gives them 3 spine players with less than 20 or so games each. Their second row is also a big problem with Cooper ageing and Hess being useless. Despite having a strong attacking middle third I can't see them finishing any higher than 10th at best.

Green's rotation of interchanges is also a huge problem and another reason for the need in coaching overhaul. His tactics just don't work like they did in 2015 and 2016. I think Morgan needs to stay in the halves with Clifford as the long term solution but we do need new edge forwards and some decent backs.

I do support the need for a coaching overhaul but who is available that also has some credentials. Don't wanna pick someone who has even less hope than Paul Green of rejuvenating the team.

    New rules changes

Don't really have any issues with the new rules. Scrum changes are meh, I like the captain challenge, especially only giving 1 per game.

The 20/40 rule is nice. Gives a team a chance to come out of a pressure situation, but also runs a risk of it being diffused not far from half way.

Captain's Challenge is a time waster. They brought them in to the 20's matches because the ref's were being told not to go to the video ref often so the game didn't run overtime and affect the main event.

The scrum changes are simply unnecessary. And what happens if they don't respond within those 5 sec? Dumb.

I hoped they'd do away with the 7 tackle set tbh.

  13. Cribbage RG Cribb

The only change I like is likely to only come into effect once or twice in the whole season ffs.

  14. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

The 40/20 rule needs to be introduced everywhere on the field.

  15. AVA T Delonge

The new 20/40 rules are kind of rubbish because it's so much easier to kick a 20/40 compared to a 40/20. Treating them as the same thing is kind of silly.

The tackling in midair is just going to be a clusterfuck from the get go I reckon. Players are going to get much better at leading with the ball/promoting the ball when they are coming down from kicks, which means either letting in uncontested tries or giving away what have to be penalty tries/sin bins because of the foul being during a try scoring opportunity. It's going to be an absolute mess I'm predicting.

I wonder if they have trialled the scrum rule...

In my head if you chose for a scrum 10metres out under the black dot then the defensive side will be defending from goalpost to side line with just 3 defenders.

That sounds a little too easy to score in theory....

  17. Magic AJ Parker

Disagree on the 20/40. Defences condense their line and front load their energy so heavily with they've got the oppositin pinned on their own line it will almost be impossible to get the space required to land a 20/40.

The no tackling in mid air is a joke. Corey Thompson should just announce his retirement now.

  18. Toolman TR Man

Yep, can see all the controversy coming already. He'll be 'technically' still in the air cause his feet haven't touched the ground by a cm so apparently the defender is supposed to just stand there and wait. And who knows if that will be a professional foul now cause surely he's taking away a try scoring opportunity by doing it.

  19. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Yeah not being able to tackle an attacking player in the air is just insane. High jumping wingers are gonna be million dollar players.

Good thing they changed the neutral infringement rule before it happened in a big game.
