One of the things Daley has worked out though, to his credit, is not to kick early too often. It makes such a difference if you can use the full set before kicking. It wasn't as obvious tonight but in Game 1 it made a huge difference. It's the difference between kicking from your own half or kicking just before or on half-way. It's so much easier to put the ball into touch as well if you want to slow the game down.

True. I forget to mention Thaiday out of Game 1 as well. I think ours were a little more costly though. :p

Who got MOTM anyone, btw? Reckon Gallen and Hoffman would be a fair shout.

Yeah, my general impression of the game was that the refereeing was pretty appalling. The complete lack of control over the ruck led to so much of the deteriorating behaviour in the second half. Stuff like Myles' punch from the ground to Tamou, that open-hand slap to Beau Scott, Thurston's forearm on Reynolds that continued after both held was called and penalty blown etc etc. NSW were equally guilty with the random forearms and whatnot, I'm sure, but I can't say I remember any specific incidents. Plus the various people getting dropped on their heads from non-lifting tackles that didn't garner any reaction from the referees. No control whatsoever. I was convinced at various points that, if the ref did actually know the rules, he'd just decided not to apply half of the book.

And there was a tackle on Inglis when he got a bit of momentum going that caused play to be temporarily stopped that looked like a massive head-high swinging arm from the angle of the TV camera. Was it as bad as it looked? If so, why no penalty?

We can talk about 'rub of the green' all you want, but it was so incompetent that it couldn't possibly have been intentionally biased, and I reckon they were pretty consistent in their incompetence.

The foul play is neither here nor there really. I'm willing to split the difference. I'm not sure if Inglis got hit high or if it missed. He seemed to get on with it pretty quickly. Slater got hit with a swinging arm but so did Tupou. Bird probably copped one high even though he was playing for these calls. And Jennings yet again attacked a defender which nearly lead to a brawl. How you can do that and not get penalised and yet Thurston gets penalised for a love tap 2 minutes later is beyond me.

My problem is the interpretation of the ruck. QLD were not doubly let alone triply or quadruply worse than NSW which is what they'd have to be for the stark disparity in ruck penalties. The standard should've been set early on because, as you say, it just got worse and worse as the night went on.

Yeah, I don't really care about the grubby forearm shit that much because it happens all game by both sides. Every punch or forearm by one player can be traced back to another player lashing out/an elbow/whatever.

Thurston gave Scott the slap because he kneed Smith while he was getting up who probably did something to Scott on the ground etc etc.

Shit like getting the ruck penalties consistent is way more important imo.

It's crap, let them have their punch up so we can get on with the game.

Thurston was terrible overall but I must say he did a pretty good job tackling Hayne. Made some very important ones. Inglis too. You could clearly see they'd done some home work during the camp after being embarrassed in Game 1.

How stupid do the people who thought Daley's appointment was a death knell for NSW look now? :ninja:

He's been pretty fortunate with selections I think. Most of the "right" players were picked largely because of their club form being good at the right time of year - Hayne over Dugan, and on the flip side you see things like Tony Williams - but you can't fault the way he's gotten the players up for it in the two series he's coached. And some of his tactics have been excellent.

Early on, was Dugan defending at centre and attacking on the wing? Struck me that Hopoate was a bit further in-field than he should have been in some attacking scenarios, which in the context of him being a club centre would make some sense given Dugan's the stronger defender of the two, but arguably more the freedom you presumably get in attack on the wing.

Is that kind of tactic even possible?

It's certainly possible. Some of us advocate it from time to time. Can't say I noticed it though.

well teo will be playing union and I have a feeling mcqueens charmed run has come to an end and he won't play a lot more first grade even.

I didn't get to say it earlier but I really liked the Dugan selection. Something that was done in the 90s and there's no reason it shouldn't work now as well.
