It’s not safe picking a centre who offers nothing. When Qld won the middle and stifled Tedesco and Cook, NSW really didn’t have a way through or an alternate option.

If Wighton defended like Brent Tate then I could see the argument for him. But he's just solid. Solid enough defender, strong ball runner. But there was nothing remotely dangerous about him across 160 minutes of footy. The fact that Chambers actually got through him a couple of times, playing as poorly as he did, is disconcerting.

I thought Wighton was actually really good tonight. I slightly disagree with the assessment of him here.

I still think it was batshit insane to leave Latrell out though. Wighton is a perfectly legitimate Origin centre option IMO but when you have Latrell and Trbojevic (and Tedesco) then he shouldn't be getting a look in. Hopefully sanity prevails next year.

I swear he routinely gets this sort of assessment when he does nothing of note. What did he do tonight that was really good?

Yep. He seems like he's more dangerous at fullback though.

I do question the wisdom of DCE not going for the point on that last kick. Would have been better off having a missed shot go dead so they have a set defensive line at the 20 to finish that last 20 seconds and go to extra time. Their line was too staggered and easily ran around for that final try.

My biggest problem with that is that something very similar happened in game 2. It clearly wasn't addressed, either have a call that means the kick is on so outside backs can get on their bike, or tell Maloney it's not on and to play out the set.

That and Maloneys forward pass were two things I cited from game 2 to suggest that it wasn't going to be a walk over and decision making could cost us. Came so very close.

I personally like Wighton in the centres, when you've got rocks or diamonds ferguson out on the flank and brain fade Maloney at 5/8th having a bit of stability there is nice.

I’m not sure if that is sarcasm or not.

    Too far out?

If I can kick a field goal from there. A fucking NRL player bloody well should be able to.

He would have been hauled over the coals for that pass if QLD win.

Too far out for a rushed kick. The major issue was the slow as fuck play the ball trying to milk the penalty, not the kick from DCE.

  12. Paddy P Orr

I personally think he would have been better off rushing a kick and having it go dead so they could at least have a set line. Probably have wound down some time.

Having it go dead is exactly why he was most likely right not to attempt the kick. It was the lower percentage option and if he misses that’s a 7 tackle set to NSW with enough time for them to get well within range.

You know Ferguson is right side and Wighton was left, yeah?

  15. Sultan Pepper HG Emm

Yeah I wasn't talking about defensive structure or anything, just in general. Ferguson is prone to try one in a million plays/lose the plot, I don't want that potential havoc on one side compounded by having a centre that might try a high risk flick pass on tackle one/low percentage plays on the other. My theory with outside backs is that you want them to be players that won't lose you the game, rather than player who will win you the game (fullback excluded).

I was at the game so have no idea how much time was actually on the clock, but I think it was like 90 seconds? Assuming NSW ran the ball back to the 20 rather quickly which they obviously would have, then 60 seconds is more than enough time for 5 or 6 tackles and a shot at goal. Unless QLD got extremely lucky and sank the field goal, the game was at best going to golden point, at which point a kick to the corner was the best play percentage wise.

  17. Paddy P Orr

With that time taken into account I will concede that was fair enough then.

I know what you’re saying but Ferguson has been pretty clutch. That is the second time he and Tedesco have combined to steal a match at the death in Origin. This one happened to matter a lot more than the previous time which was a dead rubber in 2016.

Still think Mitchell would’ve given Chambers and absolute bath last night.

That really is the other part of it isn't it. If NSW were lining up against Inglis, theres a better case for Wighton, given its Chambers and Mitchells record of destroying him he'd be a good pick.

I suppose I'm more making the case as to why Fittler went the way he did. That video highlighting the little one percenters that Latrell didn't do in game 1 really highlighted the value you get with no nonsense guys like Wighton.

Hopefully lights a fire under Latrell and he's back next year taking names. Seeing the sulking about possibly not accepting a recall isn't a good look for a young bloke, but perhaps part of that falls back on Fittler and how he either did or did not handle dropping him.

Painful to admit as a QLD fan but I respect how good Tedesco is as a player. Running game is ridiculous.
