    To Alec's comment that is.

Yeah absolutely. I was fairly happy with the discretionary state of officiating except for the ruck. That needed to be fixed especially in the respective red zones and of course a few other much more minor things. The ruck was the most urgent problem with the game in general and it has the biggest impact on the flow and speed of a match. It should've been tackled, excuse the pun, by itself. It's hard enough to fix that and yeah as I said it would take a good 12 months of consistent penalising to have any effect.

The idea that these muppets will be successful going hell for leather on 8 separate issues all at once; the ruck, the 10, markers, foot on the ball, back chat, deliberate red zone infringements, they’re fucking kidding themselves. This is the result. 25-30 a game and a sin bin or two every match.

I guess I'm just glad that Cam Smith got 10 in the bin for once. That cunt has way too much influence on the refs.

Yeah I'm against all the crackdowns, it's become a joke, but it's almost worth it for that. I'm ready to join the Cecchin Appreciation Society for that moment alone.

What's annoying me is that half the crackdowns are on what basically amount to 'old man yells at cloud' pet peeves rather than real problems in the game. "Players don't put their foot on the ball these days" is such a casual talkback radio caller talking point, anyone who gives a fuck is basically just letting their OCD get the better of them. If you don't give a fuck to penalise players for it at the business end in key moments, don't pretend it's a big enough deal to have an early-season crack down on.

I expect that many penalties in Union but not NRL. It is pretty ridiculous.

How many of the penalties weren't actually penalties? I'm 100% against the amount being blown, but the blame is on the players and coaches, IMO. How about after 3 or 4 in a row you sit someone down. Keep sitting them down until the players and coaches get it in their heads they have to actually follow the rules, unlike the last decade.

I've got no problem with them not touching the ball with their foot, but they have to make an attempt. If they just walk over the ball, it should be a penalty, and it should happen all year long.

Sort of like asking how long is a piece of string? It depends. You can find a penalty in just about every set of 6 if you look hard enough. And if they did ref to the rulebook and blew 60 penalties, you'd still be able to say techincally they were all pens. But that's not a logical argument given such a game would not remotely resemble a RL match any more.

The players have to be given some leeway which is why I don't like when people say "until they follow the rules." When did RL players ever follow the rules?
They were standing offside in 1998 too. They weren't marking square in 1993 either. What people I think should be saying is "until they abide by an interpretation of the rules which allows for a reasonable mix between breaking the rules, and keeping the contest in its best form."

How we get to that point is difficult and lengthy but I certainly agree with you this is far from the ideal way of going about it. It's not the player's fault that they've played most of their careers this way and are now being asked to radically alter what they've always known, essentially overnight. Nor is it their fault that in previous years when the refs picked one or two things to crack down on at the start of the year, they crumbled after 6 rounds and nothing got fixed.

The ruck definitely needed to be fixed up, am I surprised these two teams threw up the most penalties in an attempted crack down... not really hey? They've been two of the best or worst which ever way you want to look at it for a while now at controlling the tempo of the game by pushing the boundaries.

I don't necessarily buy the notion that it's made for a worse game either, whilst watching a stop start game is extremely frustrating it's no worse than watching a wrestle a-thon or teams blatantly standing offside to close down any chance of a spread to the back line. Lets get real, when was a Storm Vs Sharks game ever that interesting as a game of pure footy anyway?

The counter-argument to that is that if the NRL is putting more pressure on the defensive side to release earlier & get on side all the time then the attacking side has too great of an advantage if they're allowed to keep playing tunnel ball.

I reckon at some point the refs pretty much said the attacking side is so disadvantaged in the modern day game that the least we can do for them is even it up by not making them actually play the ball anymore.

Two years ago when they were the two best and playing for the premiership?

    Need me to remind you?

    Ohhhhhhhhhh FIIIIIFIIIIITAAAAAAAAAA.

    When?

Must've slept through that game it was so boring.

Cam getting binned was out of this world. I'd be happy to see 50 penalties a game if it meant he'd get binned occasionally.

Fair to say some normality has resumed, seen some shocking play the balls over the first 3 games of the round and last night in the Roosters/Sharks game in particular being at the game the blatant offsides that went uncalled especially on the 3 in and 4 in defenders were ridiculous. Not surprising that both teams struggled in attack in good ball.

30pens a game obviously isn't ideal, but last nights officiating sure isn't either.

    Haha yep.

Watch Melbourne spend all day offside against us and murder the ruck.

  17. Lukic L Popovic

I have never seen the refs give a quick tap penalty like that, no less after a complete bullshit pen.
