If you were given the option to kick for 2 almost right in front, 10metres out to seal the game or take the 1 and go into Golden Point which would you choose?

Gemmell’s right. It’s not up to the ref to determine the potential difficulty of a kick as to whether a penalty is blown or advantage is played. Klein presumably saw Boyd onside, allowed play to flow, fg kicked. No problems.

So refs should ask captains when they should play advantage? Stop talking shit.

It’s also not up to the ref to determine which is the greater advantage based on the scoreboard which is what’s being implied in this context.

No, but by definition playing the advantage is choosing the more favourable situation.

It's a simple question, do you think the Tigers were disadvantaged by receiving the 1 point for the field goal they kicked over the kick for goal 10m, just off centre that they could've received?

    Stop dodging it.

  6. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

I'm not dodging your question, I just think it's a stupid one and obvious one, that's why you keep asking it. Of course you'd take the shot at goal.

What would be the outrage if after he slotted a field goal, the ref called it back and gave them a penalty, which they end up missing the kick and losing the game? Everyone would be saying the advantage was the field goal.

Now lets say this happens 35m out on the sideline? Why should a different ruling happen purely because of the position on the field?

  7. Magic AJ Parker

Referees can rule on both territorial and tactical advantages, can they not?

  8. Magic AJ Parker

Some lemon suckers would try to claim they were given the less advantageous situation but if they missed from right in front then the outrage would be directed at the bloke kicking the ball. Surely that's just common sense....

And it's not a stupid question because by your own admission, the Tigers were disadvantaged so either the rule let them down or it was ruled on incorrectly.

Anyway we won't agree on this, you want a black & white ruling on what defines advantage I think it should be left up to the referees to decide. I actually don't think an option to the captains in a scenario such as that would be a completely bad idea either fwiw (assuming it was put into the rule book first).

I just think it’s a bit much to ask referees to make even more discretionary calls than they already do. And I don’t want any decisions affected by the scoreboard.

Yeah there's no way you can have the referees making those sort of calls. Nor can you carve out a rule to have them fucking ask players if they'd like a penalty instead of a field goal.

Absolutely this. The rules only get murky when there's lazy officiating, the problem starts from the refs not calling things earlier. I get that it's an effort to let the game flow, but blowing two penalties in the opening 4 minutes for markers not square would see them fall in to line pretty bloody quickly. Would make for much more exciting rucks too.

It's like goal line offsides. By the letter of the law both feet must be behind the line (at least that used to be the case), yet you never ever see it penalised. Either change the rule to one foot must be behind the try line, or start pulling cunts up that have one foot forward.

  12. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

I thought it was changed to one foot has to touch the line.

It may well have been, as I was posting it I was thinking that they might have cut their losses a while back and changed it, that's I chucked the brackets up. I remember some damning photos on 360 etc of every player being offside when it was the rule.

It's funny, because after all the outrage and the demotion of refs, they are going to give even LESS penalties in GP from now on.

Its a blank cheque for players. Listening to the fans’ outrage and Cleary in the presser, they’re basically condoning letting egregious penalties go unpenalised. Saying things like, historically you don’t blow penalties in GP...whatever you think of Klein’s call, this is a corrosive attitude to have.

Just scrap golden point, problem solved.

More penalties need to be blown in GP, not the other way.

Yeah I really do think GP needs to go. It’s micky mouse shit and not real footy. I don’t want to watch teams playing for a field goal. At the end of 80 minutes both teams get a point, then an extra point to the team with the most tries. If it’s still drawn then I’m happy for a point each.

  20. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Even if GP remains, I think both teams should get one point each at the end of 80mins. GP winner gets an extra point, if it's a draw it remains 1 point each.
