Is it time to let this die? We've seen

    Gold Coast-Tweed Giants
    Gold Coast Seagulls
    Gold Coast Gladiators
    Gold Coast Chargers

All fall over, the Dolphins never even started, South Queensland Crushers were a flop and the Titans are now circling the drain. There's a Bears bid popping up a bit at the moment but I'm wondering if enough is enough.

The wikipedia page on Gold Coast Chargers-Seagulls etc makes for pretty interesting reading with shamozzle after shamozzle. Seems like if it was ever going to work it was with the Chargers, they were offered a 5 million dollar grant from News Limited once the Hunter mariners were folding and first crack at their playing Roster, which included Kimmorley and Scott Hill.

Looking forward does anyone think 'Gold Coast Bears' is a viable solution? I think it would be better than the Titans but am not sold it would be an out and out winner. But surely a second South Queensland team some where could work. Do you think they would be better off promoting a Qcup team?

Ipswich would be a better option. Unlike the coast, there is nothing to do there that would distract people from attending games.

South Qld Crushers were a Brisbane side.

Yeah I realise that, given its an hour from Goldy though I thought id lump it in with the general idea of a second south east Queensland side, (St George is an hour from Wollongong etc)

Gold Coast Titans are fucking useless. Pretty sure the NRL keeps them alive too - might as well just have a team in PNG then instead.

  6. Magic AJ Parker

Geez if they appoint Kevin Walters... I reckon they may just kill themselves off.

They won't want to lose Gold Coast to AFL so the NRL will keep them alive no matter what from now on I think.

They aren't losing squat. Suns are a bigger joke than the Titans imo. Because of the way the AFL draft and trades work theyll keep getting fucked for a while yet.

Can you imagine the hippy bullshit Walters will bring in. Titans should sign someone like Griffin. This is a career killer for any young coach.

just sign an army lieutenant who has an interest in rugby league as head coach and then people who know rugby league in depth as assistants. the bro culture in every team is pathetic, it's little wonder every team is so up and down all the time. they are some of the least 'professional' athletes in the world, they don't take it seriously. half of them are on the piss every wknd.

I really have never liked the Gold Coast as a place. Only good for benders and then fuck off out of there. Went to a bucks there last year including a game of footy and that 4+ hours it takes to get from Surfers to Robina and back including the game is the absolute pits.

Yeah, Gold Coast as a region for any Top Level side is doomed to fail.

Most hilarious moment for mine is when the NRL was formed. Chargers were offered a chunk of the Mariners' squad and some board members and $5Mil. They knocked them back.

Those rejected players ended up at the Storm. When they met on the park the score was 62–6 to Melbourne and by the end of the year GC folded.

Would've been so good having that success in a Queensland based team given Melbourne essentially run as the 3rd Queensland side.

I've never really looked in to it, but has there been a growing junior base in Melbourne? Couldn't ask for much more success/star power than what they've had over the past decade.

It will be interesting how Melbourne goes once Bellamy and Smith go. If they keep missing finals, I'll be interested in what crowds they get.

I can only speak anecdotally, but no-one gives a crap about the Storm down here, even now. The crowds I've been a part of are pretty much kiwi, QLD and scum expats, so I wonder if there'd be that much change to that once Smith leaves?

Ah fair enough. I assumed they got a lot of cunts there for winning, like Lions in AFL when they kept winning.
