New trailer came out today. Fuck me I feel like I'm 6 years old in my batman outfit again I'm that excited for this movie. It's going to be fucking siiiiick.
He watched as Superman and Zod destroy the Wayne Financial building and presumably kill many of his employees. This is not Batman's brand of justice. He prefers the work in the shadows and will do anything to protect the lives of innocents. To him, Superman is an unknown and dangerous entity who has no place in his Gotham/Metropolis. It is hinted that Robin was killed by Joker (with some people speculating that he actually became the Joker like what happened in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker). He probably knows that he doesn't stand a chance, but this isn't the Batman with a cool and calm resolve as he is usually portrayed. This is a Batman who has seen more things and lost more things. He knows that if he doesn't try to bring Superman down nobody will. inb4 movie comes out and I'm completely wrong.
The extent of Superman's power also hasn't been established either to the wider world and to Superman himself. Batman may believe he stands a chance due to something we don't know about. In the comics it's typically red sun/kryptonite that Batman uses against Supes so something different here might be interesting.
I think it has more to do with Lex Luther sending Superman to deal with Batman. Superman doesn't know much about Lex Luther (nor do we in terms of the movie). This will probably then lead to them realizing Lex's greater plan and forming the Justice league with Wonder Woman which will launch DCs movie chain. The Suicide Squad will deal with more of the Joker killing Robin thing but i honest doubt that Robin has become the Joker. Hopefully we see Robin 1 (Dick Grayson) become Nightwing and then the dead Robin (Jason Todd) become Redhood. Superman and Batman have fought before, most notably in The Dark Knight Returns. Superman was sent by the US gov. to tell Batman to get his shit together.

Definitely. After the latest trailer they'll only battle for so long before coming together to take down what Lex created.
There's a line in the trailer where Superman says something like "I could kill you if I wanted to". It's because Superman is never willing to use his full strength that Batman can combat him.
