Season 13 Club Eligibility and Selection Criteria Changes

Given we may lose some people to the abyss that was the massive break, and the fact that third grade simming will be entirely automated and therefore can be guaranteed, I have decided to make uncontracted players eligible for all grades in Season 13. Each player who doesn't have a contract will be eligible for selection for whichever team he last signed a contract for. In the event that he never signed a contract, he'll be randomly assigned to a team (this will also apply to new signups who haven't yet signed for a team).

Uncontracted players will perform slightly worse than contracted players, so there's still an incentive to chase up your inactive players, but there will certainly be cases where uncontracted players will be better, or in better form, than contracted players. In these cases, club selectors will be obliged to select them ahead of contracted players, on merit.

    Effects on Recruitment

Previously, recruitment officers have basically had the responsibility of recruiting 22 players for their club's BS and ALC sides. At times I've unofficially really put pressure on clubs to give ALC spots to formerly active player as to not make them net losses to the competition. Introducing an automatically-selected, automatically-simulated third grade competition will mean I won't have to intervene in club recruitment matters nearly as much, however.

Instead of being asked to recruit a balanced squad of 22 that could field two balanced sides, clubs will now be asked to recruit a squad of 15 or so potential BS players for the season, and then however many other players they think could make a positive contribution to their subforum -- whether that be another two players or another ten. The availability of uncontracted players and the existence will mean teams having different amounts of players won't really 'break' the competition, won't leave active players not getting a game, etc.

It should be noted that uncontracted players will not have subforum access, and can still sign for clubs mid-season (be it the club they've been playing for, or another club).

    Effects on Selection

    - First grade (Bannerman Shield/Horrigan Cup)
Uncontracted players will be now be available for Bannerman Shield and Horrigan Cup sides. Selectors will be asked to continue to pick on merit and performance, and not show a bias against uncontracted players if they believe they'll be better for the team on the day.

    - Second grade (Avo Lovers Cup/Horrigan Plate)
Previously, second grade selectors were asked to prioritise activity to ensure all active players got selected. In Season 13, due to the insurance of third grade, second grade teams should be selected entirely on merit, including eligible uncontracted players. I'm sure there will be many cases of an uncontracted, inactive player playing ALC ahead of an active rookie. Indeed, all new signups should probably start in third grade. Selectors should get used to this and make sure they keep up with the form of their players in third grade.

    - Third grade (Callum-Burkey Cup/Horrigan Bowl)
These teams will be selected automatically by an automatic lineup selector I have designed. Active players will be prioritised in third grade to make sure they get a game every week. "Active player" will be defined as "a player who has logged on to the forum in the the past two weeks".

I presume there will be tracking of stats for third grade - i.e. the stats site will be adjusted to include stats for third grade as well?

Yeah indeed. It's not very hard at all to add new competitions/match statuses to the stats site. The question will be whether or not third grade should be in the sidebar; they sidebars are pretty crowded already.

Probably better to have the TC/LC stats in the side bar than the Likes stats.

Still missing the RUSim post counts, but I'll get over that.

I don't think it needs to be in the sidebar because the majority of players will just have it saying yet to bowl or yet to bat

At least they're actually working again now.

  7. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah I was thinking that. A lot of players will probably never ever play third grade.

Leave the sidebar as is imo. Most active players will probably end up playing SC or beyond anyway.

Agree that the sidebar doesn't really need to change

This seems like a really good change!

Sidebar needs to get rid of unnecessary club subbie tags under names. But this isn't the place for that

Third grade should be interesting in regards to how old stars fare against newbies now that ALC is a full competition itself

Those tags are for subforums nowadays more than the teams

Where would ex-Lions players go who never signed a contract with another club? Randomised?

  15. Gazza GJ Weaver

Lions are coming back in Season 13
